Taylor Barnett is a Costume Designer in New York City and Jacksonville, and has designed costumes for several Alhambra shows including Boeing Boeing and Beautiful: The Carol King Story (and she also happens to be the daughter of Bill Barnett, one of the Alhambra business partners). She recently provided her skills to the new Hugh Jackman/Kate Hudson film, Song Sung Blue. This is her story:
"My alarm sounds at 4am. Although it may be early, I am alive with excitement. The first day of shooting for Song Sung Blue starts today. "
There are a hundred background actors and most of the principal cast today. As the key costumer, I arrive about an hour before background, two hours before principle cast. My day starts with costume steaming and prepping, moving wardrobe racks into actor trailers, and a myriad of other duties all dependent on the day’s schedule. Throughout the day my camera roll begins to fill with continuity shots of costumes.
"By the end of the shoot I’ll have over 10,000 photos to archive."
Like most industries, it’s who you know that helps open doors. My name was passed to the supervisor from a friend and before I knew it, I was watching Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson sing to their pre-recorded playback of Patsy Kline next to an antique Merry-go-round. It was surrounded by glittering lights, listening to the live band, I knew I would remember this as a magical moment in my career. The set was constantly filled with laughter, jokes, and stories between takes. It was not uncommon to hear Hugh singing in his trailer or walk by Kate’s and listen to her practice guitar. And yes, they are as nice as you think they are. Song Sung Blue is out now. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it!
