A periodic letter from Alhambra Managing Partner Craig Smith
As I sit and write this, the theatre is filled with children auditioning for Joseph and His Technicolor Dream Coat. It’s a wonderful sight and sound – so many gifted kids, all wanting to spend their summer doing what they’re passionate about and doing it with us. It reminds me how blessed I am to do what we do here at the Alhambra. It helps me recognize that it’s not just a business. For so many of our guests, The Alhambra truly means something more than just a night out. The Alhambra touches people in a way unique to any business I have ever been around. It’s inspiring.
Inspiration is exactly what I take away from this show. The story of Joseph – however fantastic in this particular version – is a story that any one from any religion can enjoy and explore. This show is vivid in all aspects, and I’m thrilled to share it with you and your families.
This show also marks the half-way point for our season – and what a season it’s been! We kicked off with Johnny Cash. Michael Learned wowed us for a month. Loretta Swit packed the house again. Coming up next, we have Dixie Swim Club – if you liked Steel Magnolias you are going to love this show. Cindy Williams will bring her considerable talents to our stage in the Fall. Then we round out with the Broadway classic, South Pacific. Finishing up with our beloved holiday show, Christmas Carole.
Trust me when I tell you that we are more than 50% sold out for each of these shows and last year the holiday show sold out in September. So please, book your seats early. Nothing makes me sadder than when I get an email from a guest saying they can’t get into a show and I have no where to put them. It’s a good problem to have from a business standpoint, but, again, that’s not always what the Alhambra is about.
In case you missed it last month, I want to again congratulate our team on winning a Best of Jacksonville Award from Jacksonville Magazine. Winning “Best Destination Dining Restaurant” is a great accomplishment – especially since we’re not technically a restaurant! Last week we were also given a Trip Advisor award for being in their top 10% of well-reviewed businesses. Given the millions of restaurants, hotels and attractions that are reviewed annually, this is quite something. I owe it to our staff and to you – for “keeping us honest,” and pushing us to be the best we can be every night. As Loretta said, we are now the Award Winning Alhambra Theatre & Dining!
